From the results I received I can see that I would be catering to a young mostly female audience. The majority who took part in this questionnaire enjoy R’n’B music so it’ll be producing an R’n’B magazine as it will have a big readership. I would have to put a fun element into the magazine because most who took part said they never buy music magazines. I’d have to make sure my magazine stood out from the rest. I’d also need to make sure I had interesting interviews as according to the questionnaire most people enjoy the interviews. Competitions and quizzes entice people to buy the magazine so I’d include some in my magazine. The magazine would have to be priced at around £1-£2, so it would be affordable to people with different budgets. It would be published every week and include a lot of freebies to encourage people to buy the magazine.

Planning & research
The rolling stone magazine comes under the rock/pop genre. It devotes itself to politics, and popular culture alongside music. It is published every two weeks.
The magazine was founded in 1967 by Jann Wenner who runs his own company called Wenner Media LLC.
I wouldn’t be competing with this magazine as I won’t be using this genre. The rolling stone masthead isn’t always the same colour, but it always compliments the picture and headlines.
Q magazine covers a range of different genres such as pop, rock & indie. Bauer Media own Q magazine .From the success of Q they have Q radio & TV.Q magazine is known for its review sections.
They review new music, films, live concert, radio and television shows. They are also famous for there compiling list such as ‘The 100 greatest albums’.
Q always has their masthead in the top left hand corner, it is very bold and the fonts of the headlines go with the masthead. Most of the headlines are bold and will catch people’s attention
Vibe magazine comes under the R&B/Hip-hop genre. The magazine was launched by Quincy Jones in 1993 in partnership with Time inc. Vibe magazine also looks at actors and other entertainers. It owes it success to not focusing on one genre like many of its competitors.
This magazine is aimed at young adults who like R&B/Hip-hop music. The magazine covers are always eye catching and feature ‘hottest’ celebrity of the moment.
The masthead is bold and the headlines underneath compliment the masthead.
Top of the pops is mainly a pop magazine aimed at pre-teens and young teenagers. It also includes celebrity gossip, fashion and beauty advice and quizzes.
The magazine was launched in February 1995.It is published by the BBC every month. The cover always features more than one celebrity. There is usually a lot of writing and features on the front page.
The colours are always bold and vibrant. The language used is more suitable for pre-teens and young teenagers.
NME which stands for new musical express is a pop/ punk rock magazine. It was first published in 1952 and quickly became the best selling magazine in Britain.
NME is owned by IPC Media. It is aimed at the young generation who are interested in pop/punk rock. They change their masthead to suit the picture and the headlines.
There is usually one picture of a singer in either a close up shot or mid body shot.
Billboard magazine covers a wide range of genres. It is one of the oldest and most recognized magazines, founded in 1894 by William H Donaldson. It is owned by Prometheus Global media Billboard is also very famous for its music charts e.g. ‘Billboard top 100 singles’ & ‘Billboard top 200’.
The cover always features a well known singer and the important headlines are usually in bold. The masthead covers the entire top space which means you cannot miss it amongst other magazines. The colours all compliment each other and aren’t too garish.
Billboard isn’t aimed towards one specific genre as hey cover a very wide range of music genres.
Magazines of the same genre
Magazines that focus on the same genre follow the same codes and conventions.
The two magazines at the top are both very similar. The fonts and font colours are almost identical. The colours used a very dark, blacks and reds. Both magazines feature a rock singer or a band. Both magazines cater to the same audience.
The bottom two magazines cater to both the R&B/hip-hop audience. They both feature scantily clad women. These magazines tend to use ‘sexier’ images. The covers on a whole are much brighter and inviting. The covers also feature a lot of what will be in the magazine, they are busier.
Content
Music magazines will have a big feature story with the celebrity who featured on the front cover. They’ll also have:

· Music reviews E.g. latest singles, albums and concerts
· The latest music news
· The latest music events E.g. Awards, Concerts/Gigs
